This guide covers one of the most common questions among new Skyrim modders: which version of Skyrim should you choose in 2026 — Legendary Edition, Special Edition, or Anniversary Edition?
For most players and modders in 2026, the best choice is Skyrim Special Edition or Anniversary Edition on the current 1.6.1170 runtime.
Skyrim Special Edition is the best option if you want modern mods but do not want to pay extra for the official Anniversary Upgrade content.
Skyrim Anniversary Edition is suitable for players who want the most complete edition or plan to install a modpack that requires paid Creation Club content.
Skyrim Legendary Edition only makes sense for a very weak computer, an old modpack, or specific mods that were never ported to SE.
Important: Skyrim SE and AE are not two completely different technical versions of the game. Anniversary Edition is Skyrim Special Edition with additional paid content. In the modding community, the labels SE and AE are also often used for executable versions
1.5.97and1.6.x, but this is not entirely accurate from a technical standpoint.
Skyrim Legendary Edition, also known as LE or Oldrim, was released in June 2013.
It is not a separate remaster. It is a bundle containing the original 2011 version of Skyrim and all three official expansions:
Dawnguard
Hearthfire
Dragonborn
Low system requirements.
It can deliver higher FPS on very old computers.
A huge archive of classic mods.
Suitable for old modpacks created specifically for LE.
It uses the outdated technical foundation of the original Skyrim.
It is less suitable for large modern modpacks.
New mods are released for it far less often.
Many modern tools, graphical technologies, and SKSE plugins are only available for SE/AE.
Porting mods from SE often requires separate conversion of models, textures, animations, and plugins.
Skyrim Special Edition moved the PC version of the game to a 64-bit architecture, while LE remained on the old technical foundation of the original Skyrim. Because of this, SE is generally better suited to large and heavily modded setups.
Legendary Edition is no longer sold on Steam as a regular current bundle. It remains available to owners of an old license, while keys can occasionally be found on third-party marketplaces.
Skyrim Special Edition, or SE, was released in October 2016.
The edition includes the base game and all three official expansions:
Dawnguard
Hearthfire
Dragonborn
Along with the move to a 64-bit architecture, Special Edition received several graphical improvements:
reworked lighting;
volumetric god rays;
dynamic depth of field;
screen-space reflections;
improved visual effects;
new snow and water shaders;
updated color grading.
SE is more demanding than Legendary Edition, but it has a more modern technical foundation and is much better suited to large modded setups.
Skyrim Anniversary Edition, or AE, was released on November 11, 2021.
In practice, it is Skyrim Special Edition with an additional collection of official Creation Club content, including:
quests;
weapons;
armor;
spells;
player homes;
dungeons;
Survival Mode;
fishing;
new enemies;
other additions.
Owners of Skyrim Special Edition received four Creations for free:
Fishing
Rare Curios
Saints & Seducers
Survival Mode
The paid Anniversary Upgrade adds the remaining Creation Club content released as part of the anniversary edition.
However, Anniversary Edition:
does not use a separate engine;
does not have separate graphics;
does not automatically improve performance;
is not a separate modding platform.
Updated copies of SE and AE use the same executable. The main difference is whether the paid Anniversary Upgrade content is installed.
This is where most of the confusion begins.
1.5.97 is the final version of Skyrim Special Edition from before the 2021 anniversary update.
In the modding community, it is often referred to simply as SE. Today, it can only be obtained by downgrading the game or using files that were backed up earlier.
This runtime once had the best compatibility with older SKSE plugins. However, most actively maintained mods have now been ported to modern versions of the game.
1.6.640 is an outdated Steam runtime released in 2022.
It was used by many modpacks for a long time, so older guides may still describe it as the current version. In 2026, however, it is no longer the latest Steam runtime.
As of 2026, the current Steam runtime of Skyrim is 1.6.1170.
The GOG release uses version 1.6.1179. SKSE provides separate builds for Steam 1.6.1170, GOG 1.6.1179, and the older 1.5.97 runtime.
Having a
1.6.xruntime does not mean that you purchased the Anniversary Upgrade. All owners of Skyrim Special Edition received the anniversary executable update.
For a new modded setup, it is usually best to use the current version of the game. You should only downgrade to 1.5.97 or 1.6.640 when a specific modpack or SKSE plugin explicitly requires it.
There is no single clear winner here.
LE can indeed deliver more FPS on a very weak computer because of:
simpler graphics;
lower-resolution vanilla textures;
older effects;
significantly lower system requirements.
However, this does not mean that Legendary Edition is better optimized in every situation. With a large number of mods, LE's old technical foundation becomes a serious limitation.
SE and AE require a more powerful computer, but they are better suited to:
large modpacks;
high-resolution textures;
complex scripted mods;
modern animation frameworks;
new graphical technologies;
long playthroughs with many installed mods.
There is almost no difference in base performance between updated SE and AE because they use the same executable. Additional AE content can slightly increase loading times and the number of objects in the game, but purchasing the Anniversary Upgrade does not change the engine itself.
For a very weak PC: Skyrim LE.
For large and modern modpacks: Skyrim SE/AE.
Between SE and AE: a tie.
In their unmodded state, Skyrim SE and AE look considerably better than Legendary Edition.
They offer:
more modern lighting;
improved shadows;
volumetric god rays;
updated water and snow effects;
better color grading;
improved support for modern display resolutions.
Most new graphical mods and technologies are also developed primarily for SE/AE.
Skyrim SE and AE.
Legendary Edition and Special Edition include the base game and the three major expansions:
Dawnguard
Hearthfire
Dragonborn
Updated copies of Special Edition also received four free Creations.
Anniversary Edition additionally includes a large collection of paid Creation Club content, making it the most complete official edition of Skyrim.
Skyrim Anniversary Edition.
Skyrim Legendary Edition has a huge archive of older mods. However, most active development moved to Skyrim Special Edition a long time ago.
In 2026, SE/AE receives:
more new mod releases;
more frequent updates to existing projects;
modern animation mods;
new SKSE plugins;
continued development of Community Shaders and other graphical technologies;
most large modern modpacks.
SE and AE do not have completely separate modding ecosystems. Most mods are published in the shared Skyrim Special Edition category and work with both editions.
A meaningful difference usually appears only in two situations:
A mod contains an SKSE plugin built for a specific executable version.
A mod or modpack requires files from the paid Anniversary Upgrade.
Therefore, the claim that AE has far more mods than SE is incorrect. In most cases, they are part of the same modding platform.
SE and AE: first place.
LE: second place by a wide margin.
Skyrim updates used to break SKSE plugins frequently because those plugins depended on specific addresses inside the executable.
Today, developers can use:
Address Library for SKSE Plugins
CommonLibSSE-NG
CommonLibSSE-NG makes it possible to create a single DLL plugin with support for Skyrim SE, AE, and VR.
However, this does not mean that every SKSE plugin automatically works on every runtime. The mod author must intentionally implement that compatibility.
Before installing an SKSE plugin, always check:
the supported Skyrim runtime;
the required SKSE version;
whether Address Library is required;
any additional requirements listed by the author.
Modpack requirements can differ significantly.
For example, some modpacks require:
the Steam version of the game;
runtime 1.6.1170;
the full paid Anniversary Upgrade.
Other modpacks only require:
the current Steam version;
the four free Creations;
no paid Anniversary Upgrade content.
Because of this, you cannot determine a modpack's requirements solely from the words SE or AE in its name. Always read the official installation instructions for the specific modpack.
Criterion | Skyrim LE | Skyrim SE | Skyrim AE |
|---|---|---|---|
Performance on a very weak PC | Best | Average | Average |
Stability of large modpacks | Worse | Excellent | Excellent |
Vanilla graphics | Outdated | Improved | Improved |
Modern mods | Few new releases | Excellent support | Excellent support |
Official content | Base game and 3 DLCs | 3 DLCs and 4 free Creations | Most complete package |
Modern modpacks | Rarely supported | Frequently supported | Frequently supported |
Purchase required | Old edition | Base purchase | SE plus the paid upgrade |
My personal ranking is:
Skyrim Anniversary Edition
Skyrim Special Edition
Skyrim Legendary Edition
However, AE takes first place not because it performs better or has a separate modding ecosystem, but because it includes the most complete collection of official content.
you are buying Skyrim for the first time and want the most complete edition;
you want the Creation Club content;
your chosen modpack requires the full Anniversary Upgrade;
the price difference compared with SE is not important to you.
you want modern mods;
you are not interested in Creation Club content;
your chosen modpack does not require the Anniversary Upgrade;
you want to save money.
You do not need to buy the Anniversary Upgrade solely for compatibility with ordinary mods: updated SE and AE use the same modding platform.
you have a very weak computer;
you already own this version;
you need a specific old modpack;
a required mod is only available for LE.
In all other cases, the better choice in 2026 is Skyrim Special Edition or Anniversary Edition on the current 1.6.1170 runtime. You should only downgrade the game when a particular mod or modpack installation guide explicitly requires it.
